ARCHITECTURE

South African architecture reflects country climatic differences but also economic contrast.

Ruins of important settlements dated before the arrival of the colonizers had been discovered in Northern Cape and in Mpumalanga. However the Castle of Good Hope, built in 1666, is the oldest surviving building. Other important historical buildings are: the Tuynhuys –nowadays is the South African president official residence-, the Old Slave Lodge –headquarters of south African cultural History Museum-, the Old Town House and the South African Library.
