ENGLISH INFLUENCE

 

In 1820 English colonizers arrived in the Oriental Cape. In Grahamstown a typical local architecture developed, which melt traditional building with that of the new colonizers. Here stone was more diffused and so buildings were characterized by stone walls. In Port Elizabeth, English influence showed up with terraced houses and elegant verandas in Georgian or Regency style.
