KHOI
- The Khoi lived in large groups, moving about together with their cattle.
These groups consisted of several clans and could include alien client groups.
- The Khoi were the first unequal society in South Africa, for some groups
accumulated more cattle than others. This produced a social hierarchy and
stronger chieftaincy.
- Despite the introduction of herding, there was no rigid distinction
between the San and the Khoi. They spoke related languages and some San
adopted herding and were absorbed by the Khoi, living the Khoi way of life
and perhaps intermarrying with the Khoi. This gradual integration seems to
have been voluntary, for there was still enough land and pasture for both
groups to live separately.
