Break on through fu il primo singolo dei Doors ma inizialmente non ebbe un gran successo, fortuna che invece ebbe Light my fire, primo singolo della band scritto dal chitarrista Robby Krieger. La canzone si apre con una ritmica jazz in 4/4 del batterista John Desmore, segue il riff di chitarra scritto da Robby e l'ingresso perentorio della voce di Jim Morrison con l'organo che accompagna eseguendo la linea di basso e vari assoli come bridge. Jim Morrison ha spesso affermato che con "the other side" egli intende il mondo oltre le porte della percezione, il mondo dell'inconscio, della mente, dove tutto è.
