Occidental influences
The first Occidental influences on South African art can be seen with the
arrival of the first explorers in the XIX century. Thomas Baines, Fredrick I’Ons
and Thomas Bowler are some of the first important painters.
The most important European influence is Dutch landscape painting which is
characterized by low horizon, the use of many shades of brown, grey and green
and a particular attention for lights.
